Northern Utah!

We were hungry and headed to Roy, Utah, for burgers from the Burger Bar. They were delicious, and huge! We had the burgers with cheese and bacon added.  They were a little bigger than whoppers.  I also had a small "milkshake" that was more like a frosty, and piled higher than the 16 ounce cup it came in.  We had fry sauce with our fries too!  Needless to say, they were delicious and we did not leave hungry!

With our full stomachs, we headed to Brigham City, to see the Golden Spike National Historic Site, where the Eastern and Pacific Railroads were united.  Even though I learned about this many years ago, I didn't know there were actually 4 spikes used in the final tie. Each one was a precious metal, the final spike being gold. The final tie is still there, but the spikes have been removed and stored elsewhere in museums. The actual trains are long gone too, but they have recreations. It was an interesting site, seeing the construction of the track, and the work that was required to do so.  They no longer use the tracks either, except for the recreations of the event.

After Brigham City, we went to see Devil's Slide. It is limestone in an unusual formation on a mountainside. It did look like a giant slide!  We had stopped at a farmer's market and picked up some fresh produce, and we had a picnic lunch there on the roadside.  Nothing like farm fresh veggie sandwiches and fruit!

Next, we headed to Salt Lake City, where we stayed for 2 days. We toured Temple Square first. The square is 3 city blocks surrounded by other buildings the church owns. It was a beautiful place. There were many flower gardens filled with flowers in bloom, which were fragrant and just gorgeous! I wish I could name them all, but I do know some of the flowers were daffodils, tulips, purple blazing star, and in the baskets hanging on the walls were pansies of many colors.    Of course no one but Mormons are allowed in the temple, but there is a model in one of the Visitor Centers that shows you what the inside looks like. We did go inside the Tabernacle building where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings and looked at the huge pipe organ.

That night we were glad to be in a motel. There was an inch and a half of snow on the ground in the morning, and it was a very cold night! We took another day off to just relax, and get a couple things done. This motel had a kitchenette, and we took full advantage of having a stove! The next day we had some Mormon scones, which are different than the scones we know.  They were more like donuts, and we had them with honey butter and cinnamon. The place we went to didn't serve them in the traditional round shape, but they were yummy!

We went to a Greek drive-thru and got some gyros and souvlaki lunches and headed to "This is the Place" park to eat.
From here we were planning on going up to Yellowstone, but the weather isn't cooperating. The park is still closed. So we will have to come back to it later. We rerouted around it, and plan to catch it later.
